This year he wanted to make it even more difficult, by racing under the ORIGINAL BY MOTUL category conditions; the purest category.
Without any help, sleeping in a tent, with limited resources; that's how he wanted it. However, the Dakar organisation didn't allow him to participate officially; being considered an elite driver.
He eventually finished in a highly creditable 23rd position overall with a total time of 48h 56' 31''. The total time for the winner of the Original by Motul category was Charan Moore, who finished more than 4 hours after Juan's time, at 52h 24' 42''.
